What is a painting?  Does it hang only on a wall?  Exciting contemporary work by John
DeLong, created in 2009, incorporates acrylic paint, wood, metal, and L.E.D. lighting to
create richly surfaced, brightly colored paintings.  The work will surprise and delight as it
presents fun new ways to interpret painting and challenge conventional methods of
display.   This is one fun and contemporary show!

REVOLUTIONS
John uses molding paste to build up interesting texture upon which he then paints,
scrapes, and, in some instances, finger paints.  He creates dynamic surfaces using tools
ranging from traditional brushes to items found at the local hardware store.

His assemblages organize smaller richly surfaced canvases with wire and metal, breaking
up the picture plane into lively, fun compositions. Some of his thicker canvases are
reminiscent of Anslem Kiefer’s thick impasto styled canvases.  Others bring to mind the
graphical shapes of Keith Haring, with a biomorphic, almost cell-like twist.  Moreover,
others utilize a restrained palette and have the feel of color field painting.  His scrape
paintings infuse a simple palette of color with electrifying contrasting colors that breathe
through the base palette and charge the canvas with energy. Energetic, upbeat, disco
swirls create movement and excitement either framed in patterned geometry or breaking
out of the picture plane.

John paints for the shear enjoyment of exploring his medium and his energetic character is
evident in his work.

BIOGRAPHY

John DeLong was born in Toledo, Ohio and lives in Dixon, Illinois.  He has worked for the
past eleven years as a stylist during which his experience working as a hair colorist
sparked his interest in painting and creating.  As he states, “Painting is what I do for fun in
my spare time.  I tend to like the more colorful abstract things in galleries, so that is the
direction I went”.  John owns and operates, jSALON, in Dixon, Illinois.
