watercolor painting and commitment to the area's art community.
BIOGRAPHY
Born in Dixon, IL, educated at the University of Illinois, employed by Sears, Roebuck
to write copy for its catalogue, Judy ended up back in Dixon after running into James
on the train. Romance led to marriage and children and, eventually, a yearning for
more than housekeeping and child-rearing. Classes in drawing and watercolor at
Sauk Valley Community College led to Judy's painting many local scenes. It was
said that a building was in danger of demolition if Judy chose to paint a picture of it.
Judy considers the highlights of her career the selection of two of her paintings for
Purchase Awards by the Phidian Art Club in 1993 and 2009, as well as Best of
Show in 1982. Other valued awards are those by the Illinois Watercolor Society and
national juried exhibitions. She was awarded Signature status in the Illinois
Watercolor Society in 1998 after receiving top awards in several shows. A singular
honor was her selection by US Representative Bill Foster to paint an ornament for
the White House Christmas tree in 2008. This included a visit to the White House to
view the tree along with the other artists.
If asked what her inspiration or motivation for painting is, Judy would respond that
she likes to paint things that people might otherwise overlook. An old building, an
array of flowers in a market, elderly women on a bench, patterns of crops in Illinois or
French fields, quilts, doorways or pigs can all fascinate and sometimes amuse her.
Life is good. It's also beautiful and funny.
ARTIST SERIES STATEMENT
“Her World” includes watercolor paintings of scenes from Judy's travels in the United
States and France. She fell in love with France after a 60th birthday gift of a trip
there. She found the modern use of ancient buildings inspiring. Rather than
knocking down the centuries-old buildings, the French modernize the "innards" and
retain the charm of the old architecture.
As Judy states, "Visiting a new place gives me a fresh vision of that place and I want
to preserve it with paintings so others can see it the way I do."
