1,000 miles away, Sinnissippi Centers was celebrating – albeit in a much calmer manner
- its fourth anniversay as a community mental health center.
Fast forward to present day: Woodstock is celebrating its 40th Anniversary, while
Sinnissippi has its own musical festival - Gardenstock.
The festival is the brainchild of Bud LeFevre, who along with his wife, Lisa, own
Distinctive Gardens (2020 Lowell Park Road, Dixon). They are organizing this day long
musical festival as a benefit for Sinnissippi's Youth Garden Project. Bud has been
involved with Sinnissippi’s youth garden project for the past couple of years.
"I’ve always wanted to use the grounds of the business for a fundraising event like this,"
explains LeFevre. "The thing that is most important to me is that 100% of the proceeds
from donations go to the Sinnissippi Center’s Gardening Program. All event and
promotional costs are paid by Distinctive Gardens and all of the bands in the line-up are
donating their time.”
Six bands, all with a local following, have agreed to play during the day-long
Gardenstock, including Flying Fish, Anne and Maggie Hillard and Merlin (See the day’s
schedule below). “We want people to come out, enjoy the entire day and bring the entire
family. Throw a chair or blanket in the car, and bring a picnic basket along with all the
fixins’,” added LeFevre.
“It’s great that Bud and Lisa are willing to host this event,” explains Greg Gates,
marketing manager for Sinnissippi Centers. “The fact that all proceeds from Gardenstock
will go to support our garden project is a generous gesture on their part."
The Youth Garden Project was originally established at Sinnissippi’s Dixon Office with
funds by the Sinnissippi Foundation.
“Youth from our court involved program participate in the planting and maintenance of
the garden. This year, clients from other agency programs are helping out,” states Gates.
“The program provides our high risk youth and others with a great learning opportunity,”
explains Carol Novak, who oversees the garden project. “They learn how to cooperatively
plan and carry out the project; work along side adult mentors and in the end ‘give back’
to their community, because the produce raised will be distributed to families in need,”
adds Novak.
