My Dad, The Garden and Good Friday

Cool season veggies are a lot of fun.

I learned a lot from my dad and my Uncle Jink about gardening.  I think that's the way a lot of gardener's learn; from working with their family, friends and neighbors.  The garden holds a lot of memories for me growing up.  With each season of the garden I am reminded of the fun times.

Cool season veggies are a lot of fun. Asparagus starts coming on.  There's new life in the garden. And we can all get some more 'outside' time, something I just love.

As soon as the soil can be worked plant your peas. I have done this before and then had it snow and they still grew. Other cool season veggies that are fun to plant are potatoes, radishes beets, carrots, spinach, and lettuce. I usually plant the seed type first and wait a little bit until after the real hard frosts are over to plant the other cool crops like cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and brussel sprouts.

Make sure you harden off your plants before planting. You cannot take them from the greenhouse and put them into the ground it will be too much of a shock. I don't plant my seed crops in rows. Sometimes I mix radishes and carrots together and just sprinkle them over the bed and then work the soil over them. For example, lettuce and spinach are so fine that I work a ¼ inch of soil over them at the most. The deepest are probably the beets and peas. I go a little deeper, like a half inch. I find I don't have to thin out near as much if I don't plant in a row.

Water them in and don't put mulch on them until after they germinate. My dad said, to have your potatoes in by Good Friday. One year it snowed three inches and the ground was still frozen. I wish he were here so I could ask him I was supposed to get my potatoes in that year.

Plant potatoes in hills, digging at least 8-10 inch deep and put three chunks of potatoes in with two eyes in each chunk. Eyes up. You should get certified potatoes. They call them seed potatoes. Mail order is fun because you can get a lot of the different colored types. Look for certified because then there are no diseases.

Funny story~ I was out one day enjoying the town of Galena and eating lunch when I realized it was Good Friday and I didn't have my potatoes in. I raced home and got them in just as it got dark. I guess I made my dad's day.

Happy Gardening,

Bud

    ----------- TIPS --------------

Limited quantities. If you put multiples of an item you want and we only have one in stock an alert will pop up on the desktop site telling you it is out of stock. That means the quantity you selected is higher than the available inventory. For example, Tufa Troughs are all unique. There is only one of each. Each week we take an inventory and add back products that might show as sold out. We’re doing this so we don’t oversell by mistake. So our product availability will change weekly.

iPad shopping. We learned that the pop-up screen where you enter your credit card info was a problem for some. At times the credit card fields were way at the top of the screen and some could not see where to enter their information when shopping on an iPad. This happened especially when they had big orders. If you have problems please message our Facebook Page. We’re learning right along with you and want to help.
